My daughter’s are 3 and 6 so the question of ‘When To Start Your Kid In Sports’ came up within the past few years. Trying to determine which sport, the cost, time and most importantly, value to the kid takes some consideration.
Every parent has their own opinion so it’s important to gauge what works for your family. We began with dance when my oldest was 2 and after a few years we realized she preferred to chase a ball rather than do a plié…so we went on to soccer. Trading in the tutu for a pair of cleats was the best choice we could have made. And the schedule, two afternoons a week were perfect for a 6 year old. It’s important to realize sports are a part of youth…but in my opinion, there should still be room for free-range play and imagination, at least in elementary school where there also should be personnel with training for CPR Certification Baltimore.
So if you’re debating whether your preschooler, kindergartner or maybe even 3rd grader is ready to try a sport…ask them. What interests them? Do they want to dance on a stage or run across a field? Once you have an idea, contact your local dance studio or boy’s and girl’s club and maybe even ask about a trial run. Luckily there are so many options for kids these days, you’ll be sure to find a sport that excites them. If they’re interested in darts, for example, you have to teach them how to throw darts.
The key is to continue listening to your kid…connect with them after class or practice and make sure to stay involved with what’s happening on the team.
And a little PSA – make sure your kid has the proper gear to play safely. Our friends at CPR Law provided this infographic to bring awareness to safety in youth sports. You can find more information on their website HERE.
