You may have noticed a little (okay, major) change in my appearance over the past few weeks…so for those of you wondering, yes I did indeed get hair extensions from https://yvonnehodgsonhair.co.uk/.
And so after a few weeks of wearing/washing/styling, I feel like I can provide a thorough review of my entire experience and tell you what it’s really like. Because I know some of you are dying to know (coming from the dozens of DM’s I’ve received on Instagram!).
Okay, I’ll start from the beginning. I have wanted hair extensions for years. Naturally, my hair is super thin and as many times as I’ve tried to grow it out, I could never get the look I was going for…which was thick, voluminous and consistent. And by consistent, I mean my texture varies daily depending on the weather (like most of you), so styling was always tricky, especially in the PNW.
So I did some research. And then some more. And then fast-forward several months, I discovered Kimberly Marie on Instagram. She had a swoon-worthy feed to match a raving reputation, so I contacted her to chat further. I was still slightly nervous at this point, but after she walked me through the dynamics of the extensions, installation and upkeep, I booked without hesitation. It was now or never…and it’s only hair – worst case scenario, I could always have them taken out, right?
In between my conversation with Kimberly and my actual appointment, I definitely did my homework on the hair extension brand, Hotheads Hair Extensions. And read every single FAQ, so I knew exactly what I was in for before/during/after.
If you’ve read about (or have experience with) extensions in the past…the following info might surprise you. Because Hotheads Hair Extensions are completely different. Their adhesive weft extensions are applied without the need for tools or heat…also known as ‘tape-in extensions.’
Let me clarify – zero braiding, glueing, hair falling out, etc.
And the installation process only takes about an hour – start to finish.
Okay now to answer some of your burning questions (answers provided by Kimberly):
What are Hotheads Hair Extensions?
Hotheads Hair Extensions are human hair, adhesive weft extensions also known as tape-in extensions.
How long do they last?
Hotheads Hair Extensions can last up to 8-10 weeks varying on your hair growth. This is recommended to eliminate matting, frizzing and tangling, and ensures the extension is always fresh and close to the scalp. The hair can be applied up to 3 times for a total of about 6-8 months of wear, as long as they are properly cared for & maintained.
How much do they cost?
Cost varies depending upon the type, quantity & length of hair used. See pricing menu for starting pricing, this includes a blending cut to shape & contour the extensions with your natural hair.
What should I expect at my initial appointment?
You will need to arrive at the salon with clean, dry, product-free hair. Your hair will be installed & blended with your natural hair. You will receive a finish style & be on your way!
What is a Maintenance appointment?
A maintenance appointment is scheduled 8-10 weeks after your initial appointment. This includes the removal of your extensions, shampoo, haircut, re-tape, re-installation & finish style. It is very important that you come to this appointment with clean hair for proper removal of the extensions. If the hair is properly maintained Hotheads Hair Extensions can be used for up to 3 applications! (Intial + 2 mainteinance)
Can I color my hair with extensions?
Yes! You can receive color services as long as the color does not affect the extension bonds. Typically hairline & partial color services are done to keep your color fresh.
What is the difference between a Full head lengthening vs. Volumizing?
The difference between lengthening & volumizing is the amount of hair used. Lengthening uses double the amount of hair to achieve the proper look for added length. To simply add thickness or volume to your natural hair, not as much hair is need to to achieve this look. During your color-match consultation we will determine the best option for you to achieve your desired look!
How long does my hair need to be to have extensions?
It is recommended for your natural hair length be no shorter that shoulder length to ensure a seamless blend.
I’d also like to note – Hotheads Hair Extensions are the first carbon neutral extensions company, in addition to supporting Heart for India, which provides education to underprivileged girls in India.
You would think at this point I would share the pros and cons of hair extensions…but in all honesty, I’ve only had a really positive experience. They are an investment, but I was surprised how long they lasted…and they have saved me so much time. I usually wash, dry and style once or twice a week and touch up here and there. What seems like a high maintenance addition to your beauty routine, actually has saved me a TON of time. The style holds a million times better than my pre-extensions hair and the results are well…to be frank, amazing. I have NEVER been complimented so much in my entire life than these past few weeks!
A few things to note, Hotheads Hair Extensions are really resilient and can handle normal washing, styling, even working out, but it’s important to care for them appropriately. I use their Clean Shampoo, Smooth Conditioner and Hydrate Conditioning Masque which keeps the extensions healthy and strong. You can find the Do’s & Don’ts of extension hair care on Kimberly Marie’s website.
