This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Macy’s Rwanda Path to Peace initiative. “The program affords an opportunity to create economic sustainability and stability for the women weavers of Rwanda impacted by the country’s civil war and genocide, and is now the longest-lasting program of its kind.” (Business Wire)
As part of the Macy’s Rwanda Path to Peace, Rwandan women using age-old methods make these hand-woven baskets. This craft is taught by Gahaya Links, a Rwandan handicraft company dedicated to women’s economic empowerment, which aims to lift Rwandan women out of poverty by providing expert training in basket weaving to create sustainable income-generating opportunities.
The baskets are fair-trade certified, so they’re a great “gift that gives” because of the economic empowerment they provide to women.
The Rwanda 10th Anniversary Woven Basket Collection includes 9-inch, 12-inch, & 16-inch varieties with a price range from $30-$60.
Beyond looking beautiful on a coffee table or kitchen counter, through the “trade-not-aid” wages that the artists receive, these women are able to take care of essential human needs, send their children to school, buy malaria nets and have access to healthcare. The benefits of this program reach beyond these women by extending into their families and communities.
