I’m at it again – trying something new! This time I decided to finally check out Flywheel Sports via ClassPass. It has been on my TO DO list for weeks but I was determined to commit and make it happen (this is always the hardest part!) and I have one major regret – Why have I not tried this before?! I LOVE it! Flywheel is a completely re-imagined style of spinning.
I had the opportunity to take Meredith’s theme ride class, Fly 45 – Jock Jams, in the Bellevue studio. It was ALL music from the 90’s & 2000’s (Um, my DREAM playlist). Meredith, who is obviously a cycling guru, provided a killer workout, but with so much energy and variety the 45 minute ride flew by. I finished the ride completely soaked in sweat…ahhh love this.
Why is Flywheel different than your typical spin class? Honestly, it’s hard to explain until you actually take your first class…then you’ll be hooked. I loved the stadium seating, advanced custom-made bikes, high-tech digital gauges…and the music! Upon walking into the beautiful studio I was kindly greeted and assisted with the check-in process. Prior to coming to class I reserved via ClassPass. I then followed up with a phone call to the studio as I read online you can reserve your seat and provide your shoe size. When I arrived, my pre-selected shoes were waiting in a neat cubby for me – quick and easy! At this point, I realized this was definitely not my typical spin class. Fortunately I was a bit early so I could explore the studio, check out their awesome apparel and just revel in the cool, industrial feel of the space.
When class began, Meredith assisted my friend and I with our bikes to make sure the adjustments were accurate. Then the ride began…
….And my competitive side appeared. You have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Torqboard’ which calculates your ‘power’ in relation to others in the class. Everyone had a fun nickname, but of course I missed that memo and was ‘Portia.’ Definitely will create a bit more ambiguity next time :). After the ride we went to the Flywheel website and immediately viewed our metrics including RPM’s, Torq, Speed, Power, Distance and Estimated Calories – This.was.awesome. Definitely made me crave returning, wanting to improve my performance and push myself even harder. Speaking of harder, one of the methods that sets Flywheel apart from other spinning classes is the use of weighted bars. I was nervous at the thought of it but I actually loved it – major arm toning – Yes please!
A little more perks of Flywheel include towels, bike shoes, and lockers all for free and there were adorable bowls of hair ties and bobby pins in the restrooms (it’s the little things!).
Fun Fact: Flywheel launched in 2010 in New York, followed by several major cities – and now have gone international in Dubai! So in case you’re traveling…
I loved that I was able to try a class out of my comfort zone thanks to ClassPass. It has been a fantastic way to explore all that the Seattle fitness scene has to offer. Stay tuned for more fit-ventures.
