2016 was a year for adventure in our family. We skied Whistler, biked Portland, swam in Idaho, and rang in the New Year on Whidbey Island! We are so fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest, nestled in evergreen forests, alongside the Pacific Ocean, and surrounded by majestic Cascade Mountains. Just a short drive (or even in our own backyard!), our thirst for wander is quenched.
The gift of experience has an immeasurable value – one we plan to take even further in the new year. For this post, I’ve rounded up 6 things I want to do with my kids in 2017 – to share a glimpse into our little family bucket list, and hopefully inspire you to plan an adventure too!
Travel Out of Country
With Canada just a quick drive North, we’re able to cross the border quite often – however, this year, my goal is to travel, with my kids, to another country. Adalyn, my six year old, has a serious case of wanderlust and it melts my heart. She studies our globe and ponders where she wants to go – the latest being Africa. I had the fortune of traveling with my parents growing up, totally 20 countries thus far. For my children, I want to encourage the hunger to explore – to see – to taste – to breathe air in another land. I want to raise little voyagers that are constantly full of fascination and curiosity. So stay tuned…
One Overnight Adventure Per Month
One of our top highlights of 2016, was a calendar full of weekend trips. We plan to continue the tradition, ensuring one overnight adventure per month. Whether we’re venturing to a new city, a new campground, or enjoying some downtime at our family beach house – a getaway a month will do a family good. Choosing a wooden playhouse so you and your kids can bond in your backyard is also a splendid idea.
Hike
Okay, so I know I’m from the PNW, which means hiking should already be one of my favorite pastimes…but I’ll be honest, it’s a struggle with little ones! However, my friend Angela from Northwest Healthy Mama has perfected family hiking, and has us feeling inspired for the New Year! So for 2017, one of our goals is to lace up our boots and hit the trails. And I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll more than likely be backpacking my 4 year old around…nothing like a challenge! :)
Boat Camp
My husband’s motto: Life is better on a boat! We spend days upon days, venturing through the Puget Sound and it has easily become one of our family’s very favorite hobbies. For 2017, a goal my husband added to this list is to boat camp during our family rafting trip. We have our sights set on a trip through the San Juan Islands, mooring at Rosario Resort (Orcas Island).
Ski
We took our girl’s skiing for the first time in 2016 during our trip to Whistler. They were only 3 & 5, yet showed so much bravery and willingness to try! So for 2017, we’re vowing to make more trips to the powder. We’re headed to Leavenworth in a few weeks, with a day at Steven’s Pass already planned (follow along on Insta Stories!).
Fancy dates
I asked my girl’s if they wanted to contribute to the list of things to do in 2017 and they both suggested more fancy dates! So we shall doll up and venture to exquisite places! I’m thinking this will be a great category to explore the arts! #WellRounded
*A little note about the darling dress and shoes in this post…
I picked up these Gymboree dresses (which are perfect for their ‘fancy’ dates) at the Seattle Premium Outlets last week (they were only $10!). And the sweetest little sparkly shoes are from De Blossom!
I’d love to know what you have planned for 2017 – any adventures on the calendar? Or if you have some fun tips – send them my way!
Happy New Year!
