Amazon put down roots in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle just over 10 years ago with the idea of creating a thriving community where people can live, work and play. Now with over 40,000 employees working in their urban campus and Seattle being voted as one of the best places to live and visit, the neighborhood has become a destination all on its own.
And it goes beyond a visit to the Amazon Spheres. There’s a plethora of activities all within walking distance of the global empire’s corporate headquarters. From kayaking to wine tasting to garden yoga. And I gave it a test run in just 48 hours to share with you.
STAY
If you’re a local, I encourage you to enjoy a staycation in the South Lake Union neighborhood. It’s come along way since parking lots and warehouses. The revamped area feels very ‘new Seattle’ and it’s fun to explore. Especially, if you’re used to hunkering down in Capitol Hill or Pioneer Square.
And if you’re visiting from out of town, it’s a great central location that offers amazing views of Lake Union, along with access to all the major hotspots.
Here’s where I recommend: Staybridge Suites. It just opened a few months ago by Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) as a co-branded property with Even Hotel.
Staybridge Suites is perfect for the business or family traveler with 112 studio and one-bedroom suites. In addition, with full kitchens, work areas and a ‘home away from home’ feel.

I was staying with friends that were experiencing the Even concept, so I dined with them one morning, which I figured I’d also share because it perfectly highlights the IHG presentation overall…

A perfect space for yoga…or cocktails!

Play
In addition to the dozens of amenities on property, Staybridge Suites is also right across the street from Lake Union where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards and even take a tour around the lake (alongside the houseboats!). Very Northwest.

Eat
There is no shortage of dining in South Lake Union, which has become one of Seattle’s coveted culinary scenes. From local coffee, to craft brew to hand-tossed pizza, you’ll find authentic Pacific Northwest dishes alongside a melting pot of cultural infusions influenced by the Amazon community. A few of my favorites include Cherry Street Coffee House, Serious Pie and Cuoco (a Tom Douglas Restaurant).
Wander
South Lake Union is within walking distance to the Space Needle, MOPOP, Pacific Science Center and The Museum of History & Industry. Even better, utilize one of the station-free bike sharing services like ofo for $1/hour and explore more of the city. Download the app to find a bike close by (they’re everywhere I promise!).
So there you have it – 4 things do in the up and coming Amazon neighborhood! Use this post as a quick reference for your next Seattle trip or staycation and make sure to book your stay at the brand new Staybridge Suites! #HugelyDifferent
