You wake up, look outside and it’s, quite possibly, raining the hardest you’ve ever seen (or at least it seems that way when you are snuggled in your warm sanctuary of sleep). You decide to cancel your morning run. Big Mistake! The experts at RunHaven have my favorite running tip:
(Never) Cut a run short because it starts to snow, rain, get hot or become windy. Running in challenging elements makes you stronger mentally. View it as a training opportunity to increase stamina, willpower and discipline.
Some of my favorite runs have been amongst grey clouds and drizzly skies. It’s kind of inevitable living in the PNW, if you aren’t willing to run in the rain, you are likely to miss many days of running. It’s funny, we often complain about a wet forecast, yet we really do appreciate it…especially when we see our bright green grass and lush evergreens.
Now for the important part – sure, I’ll run in the rain, but how do I stay dry? This is kind of monumental when being able to successfully conquer a soggy run. You definitely don’t want to be miserable. I have 3 Must-Haves for surviving wet conditions and making your run simply amazing:
Hands-down, the Ghost 7 GTX is my favorite thing Brooks has ever produced. Miracle in a shoe. It is super lightweight, feels like you are walking on clouds and the best part…it’s Waterproof! The upper is lined with GORE-TEX® which keeps your feet 100% dry, regardless if you are tromping through rain, snow or sleet. I took it for a test drive at the St. Patrick’s Day Dash – which had record rainfall for Seattle (that means ALOT of rain).

@stpatsdaydash rocking my #neon #green knee highs #runhappy @brooksrunning – sporting my FAVE rainy day shoe: #ghostgtx #brooks seriously stayed dry ALL day and it rained like a monsoon ☔️
Every inch of me was soaking wet post-race EXCEPT my feet. It actually blew me mind that my toes stayed completely dry and warm. So when I had the opportunity to test out the Brooks PureProject Running Jacket II and Hat II to complete my waterproof set-up – I was game!
@brooksrunning Hat ✅ #pureproject Waterproof Jacket ✅ #GhostGTX Shoes ✅…Let’s run! #runhappy #runintherainFirst of all, I LOVE the PureProject line, as I shared in a previous post. The style, fit and colors are perfection. Finding comfortable, functional (+ cute) running clothes can be difficult. Fortunately Brooks has this covered.
The PureProject Running Jacket II is water AND windproof, lightweight and easy to run in. I am really picky with layers, especially on a run and I loved wearing this jacket. It kept me warm (but not hot!) and dry on a rainy day. Not to mention, it’s pretty! ♥
My next running gear pick is the Brooks Hat II. It’s lightweight (notice a theme yet?) and adjustable, which is a must for me!
So there you have it! You CAN actually run in the rain…don’t worry, you won’t melt. You may discover you prefer it over super sunny days. #RunHappy
