Weekend’s are for exploring – finding new adventures, and enjoying your own backyard. Fortunately, in the PNW, the urge to wander and travel can be a quick escape – just a few hours and you enter a new country (Canada) or a new state (Idaho).
THIS weekend we packed up and headed to Oregon to enjoy the finest Portland has to offer – good food, great donuts (duh), and endless bike riding…because when in PDX, that’s what you do, am I right?
Healthy Road Trip Snacks
Since we’ve been road tripping our hearts lately, I thought I’d share some of our favorite healthy road trip snacks. It’s easy to fall weak for gas station junk food…but that stuff can really ruin a vacation (insert tummy aches). So keep your family healthy (and save $$) with this list:
Fruit that is car-friendly → Bananas, Apples, Grapes
Whether you’re driving, the co-pilot or have littles in the backseat – you want something easy and mess-free. Plus you get a boost of nutrition before the burger, fries (& margarita?) once you get to your destination.

Veggies that are car-friendly → Celery, Carrots, Cucumbers
I get it – when you think of road trips, stalks of celery may not be at the top of your list, but, they keep your car (& your body) clean. So cut up a few veggies, throw in tupperware and avoid the mini marts!
Trail Mix
Probably my favorite snack on the road. A little protein, a little sweet, a little crunch – helps curb hunger until the next meal.

Bottled Water
The most necessary item on this list. In fact, I always have a case of water in my trunk – never be without water. Staying hydrated can make a world of difference on how you feel on vacation. And ditch the soda → nothing good about it. Does not count towards your daily water intake. ;)
Freeze Dried Fruit
We ALL have that sweet tooth on a road trip – and my favorite way to cure that candy crush is with freeze dried fruit. Yummy with a fun texture, the kiddos are obsessed! And no sugar crash!

Bars (Granola, Protein, Superfood)
Packs easy and ready to eat – and everybody loves them. In fact, keep a few in your purse at all times – because who knows when someone will be hungry.
Muffins
I usually make a batch of THESE muffins and pack in ziplock bags before the trip. The girl’s help bake them and pick their favorite mix-ins, so I know they’ll eat them. Getting kid’s involved makes a world of difference on what they’ll eat…plus these one’s are uber-healthy & gluten-free!
Justin’s Almond Butter Squeeze Pack
I am OBSESSED with Justin’s Almond Butter and the pouches are brilliant! They’re a quick (mess-free!) way to get a boost of protein and healthy fats, which will curb hunger until the next meal stop.
Beef Jerky
Okay, disclaimer – I’m a pescatarian (meaning I don’t eat meat), however, my family does and this is definitely one of their favorite snacks. My husband makes his own variety or we buy KRAVE because they are all-natural with no artificial ingredients. Again – super easy to pack and keeps the car mayhem-free.
Mason Jar Salad
Hear me out – I know you really want to drive-through your heart out, so if you can’t plan healthy meal stops, consider pre-making mason jar salads before the trip. They’re a convenient lunch-on-the-road and the varieties (to please everyone) are endless! p.s. Use the new OrganicGirl PepperGreens…SO good!

Before you head out of town, stop by Whole Foods and look for the 365 Everyday Value brand – it’s the WF private label, known to have the best price points in the store. It’s a competitive brand that includes many organic and non-gmo products.
