Maintaining fitness and overall wellness is everything but a cookie cutter formula. My version of working out most likely looks completely different than yours…and that’s okay. We all have different goals, needs, desires, and let’s be real…interest levels. I’ll be the first one to tell you, I struggle dragging my butt to a HIIT class, and would much rather run 6 miles than lift weights on my own for an hour. Where you may live for those heart-pumping plyometrics! Still cool – we don’t all need to love the exact same routine. But here’s the thing that is true across the board…we ALL need accountability. And with the days getting shorter and the mornings getting colder, I’m going to bet your squat squad is dwindling down a bit. You can read these tips on How to plank longer.
I first noticed how much I thrive on my fitness tribe after I had Mila (almost 5 years ago). I needed partnership in the gym, I needed someone to text me every morning and say ‘let’s go…we got this!’ But after a few years, the mamas started getting busier, going back to work, starting businesses, some even moved…and the tribe started to slowly fade. I’m going to tell you, it has been the hardest thing for me to continue working out without our group of 5 (sometimes more!). There’s still 1 or 2 of us, but we’re only able to align our schedules 2-3 days/week at best. It straight up stinks.
So how do we fix this? Well, of course you can join a new gym, mix in a few barre or spin classes, chat it up with other like-minded mamas when possible…or even better – find a small studio that still provides group fitness but in a more intimate setting, allowing you to build those relationships that keep you coming back (accountability).
I had the opportunity of meeting Jessica Johnston, owner of Rain City Fitness, a few years ago when our kiddos were in preschool together. Shortly after having her third baby, she became an AFAA/NASM certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer and a Precision Nutritional Coach. She also competed in her first fitness competition in October 2016.
Jessica opened Rain City Fitness to offer one-on-one, duo and group personal training sessions in a private setting. Big box gyms can be incredibly intimidating, not to mention overwhelming. All of the Rain City Fitness sessions are only 30 minutes and are completely tailored to the clients. My friend and I actually tried her HIIT style training (remember my dislike above) and we loved it! The studio offers a space that is intimate, engaging and open for conversation (which let’s be honest…is 90% of our mama workouts). But don’t get me wrong…you will sweat. And then 30 minutes later, you will go on with your day feeling accomplished.
We all need that friend to keep us moving, and Jessica is exactly that.
Rain City Fitness is located in Smokey Point, WA and still has open personal training sessions, along with availability in their Monday/Wednesday/Friday Women’s Group at 5:30pm! This is a circuit style class combining body weight, cardio, and lifting.
The cost for group training is $110/month for 2x weekly. Private training starts at $36/session.
And lastly, Jessica is hosting her second fitness retreat, UNPLUGGED this upcoming weekend in Sequim, WA! The retreat will be at a gorgeous lodge style home and will include HIIT, hiking, yoga, sip & paint and dream board creation (my favorite!).
